Fresh air and adventure cycling to The Turf Hotel on the Exe Estuary
The cycle ride to The Turf Hotel is one of my all-time favourites. It’s a leisurely ride down the towpath of the River Exe, but you’re venturing through an area of outstanding natural beauty and the views across the Exe estuary are glorious. And then you arrive at The Turf, one of Devon’s finest public houses, run by Clive and Ginny Redfurn since 1990.
The place is a true testament to their hard work and dedication. Pretty much all the goodies on offer at The Turf are homemade and locally sourced so it’s certainly a place to get stuck in. Favourites include the crispy beer battered fish of the day and the sticky toffee pudding served with custard or real Devon clotted cream. Be warned however, this pudding has quite a reputation and due to its popularity should be ordered early to avoid disappointment!
The Turf can only be reached by foot, boat or bicycle, giving you the perfect excuse to go slow and set aside an entire day for your outing. A great day out for all the family (including your canine companions), the grounds of The Turf provide the perfect place for the kids to embark on a Famous Five style adventure, while the rest of you simply sit back and enjoy all the delights is has to offer.
TiYK Top Tip! During the summer months you can hire one of The Turf ‘s two BBQs. The giant beer garden offers fabulous views and is the perfect spot to celebrate any occasion.
